Naming Files and Folders
Files within your Web site must adhere to the naming conventions and limitations of the FTP server to which you upload them.
Use alphanumeric characters when you name HTML documents or graphic files. For the greatest compatibility, use eight-character, single-word filenames (e.g., document.html, photo.gif). If you want multiple-word filenames, use an underscore ( _ ) or hyphen ( - ) character rather than a space character. If you name a file using space characters, the space characters become ASCII-encoded, and links to the file are broken.
Linux Web servers are case-sensitive. When you create links manually, make
sure you match the case of the filename to which you are linking.
Options for Site Mappings
The first time you use Uploader, the Site Mappings dialog box appears. If you
have already used Uploader, you can open the Site Mappings dialog box by
starting Uploader and then clicking Add or by choosing a profile from the site
mapping list. In the Site Mappings dialog box, configure your site mapping
preferences using the answers provided by your ISP and the following guidelines.
Site Mapping Name - Enter a name for the profile you are creating. The profile name appears only in the Site Mapping dialog box and should be descriptive of the Web site.
Hostname: yourname.com
Remote Folder: /httpdocs
If your local folder contains subfolders, Uploader automatically creates
subfolders in the remote location.
Local Folder - Enter the local path to your Web site folder, or click
Browse and select your Web site folder. If you start Uploader from within
PageMill, PageMill automatically uses the folder containing the active document.
User name - Enter your username
Password - Enter the password for your username. If you want Uploader
to store the password for this profile, select the Save Password option.
Upload Basis - Each time you use Uploader, it creates a log file named
"x.log" (where "x" is the name of the active site mapping profile) that contains
the list of the files you uploaded and when you uploaded them. The options in
the Upload basis section govern how Uploader uses the information in the log
file to upload files.
Because Uploader uses file modification dates (the date the file was last
altered) to determine which files you updated locally, ensure your system clock
is accurate.
Previous Log File - If you select the Previous log file option,
Uploader uploads new files as well as those files that have a different
modification date or file size from the size or date listed for them in the last
log file.
Remote File Status - If you select the Remote File Status options,
Uploader compares the modification date and file size of both local files and
remote files (files on the FTP server). Uploader uploads new files as well as
files that have a different modification date or file size.
Always - If you select the Always option, Uploader uploads all files
in the Local folder. If you have adjusted your computer's clock, select the
Always option for your first upload after making the clock adjustment.
Uploading Your Site
After you create or customize your site mapping profile, click OK and then
click Upload in the Site Mappings dialog box. If you started Uploader from
Windows Explorer, Uploader uploads the files that are in the folder you selected
as the site mapping profile. If you started Uploader from within PageMill,
PageMill saves the active document, frameset, or object, and then Uploader
uploads it. Always upload to the www folder in your hosting account. After you
connect to the server, choose the www folder for your files destination.
In addition to Uploaders log file, which contains information about the files
you last uploaded, Uploader creates a file named "x_ftp.log" (where "x" is the
name of the active site mapping profile) that contains a list of all the FTP
commands you used in the last FTP session.
Temporary Mappings
If you open a PageMill document that is not in the currently selected Local folder and then choose a command from the File > Upload submenu, Uploader creates a temporary folder to resolve their different pathnames. For example, if you upload the file named "Hello.htm" that is in the C:\Mysite directory, but you select a site mapping profile whose Local folder is the D:\Some_other_site directory, Uploader creates a temporary profile whose Local folder is C:\Mysite. The temporary profile matches all other aspects (e.g., login information, Remote folder) of the currently selected profile.
